You took a photo you don’t want anyone to see, or one you simply don’t need, and you delete it. It disappears from your gallery. But somewhere in the back of your mind is a question: is it really gone?

The honest answer is: usually not straight away, and possibly not everywhere. Here’s what actually happens.

Step 1: it goes to the bin first

On most phones, deleting a photo doesn’t erase it. It moves it to a holding folder, so you can get it back if you made a mistake.

WhereFolderHow long deleted photos stay
iPhone and iPad (Photos app)Recently DeletedAbout 30 days
Google PhotosBin (or Trash)60 days for backed-up items, 30 days for items only on your device
Samsung GalleryRecycle bin30 days

The exact times can change, and some apps let you turn the bin off. You can usually empty the folder yourself to remove photos straight away. On iPhones, the Recently Deleted album is locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.

Deleting a photo usually doesn’t erase it. It moves it to a holding folder.

Step 2: the cloud

If your photos are backed up to a cloud service, such as iCloud Photos, Google Photos or OneDrive, your phone and the cloud are kept in sync. In most set-ups, deleting a photo on your phone also deletes it from the cloud and from your other devices, after the same waiting period.

But not always. Some services, and some settings, treat the cloud as a separate backup, so deleting on your phone leaves the cloud copy untouched. Check your settings, or look in the service’s website or app, to be sure.

Step 3: the copies you don’t control

Deleting a photo from your gallery doesn’t touch copies you have already sent or saved elsewhere:

  • Messages and chats. A photo sent on WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage or by email is a separate copy on the other person’s device, and often in their backups too. Some apps let you delete a message for everyone within a time limit, but the other person may already have saved it.
  • Social media. Deleting a post removes it from public view, but people may have taken screenshots, and companies keep data for a period under their own policies.
  • Old backups and computers. Copies may remain in older phone backups, on a computer you synced with, or on a memory card.

Step 4: what happens inside the phone’s storage

Even after a photo is permanently deleted, you might wonder whether someone with special tools could recover it from the phone’s memory.

On older computers with spinning hard drives, deleting a file usually just marked its space as free. The data stayed there until something new was written over it, which is why recovery software often worked.

Modern smartphones are very different. Both iPhones and recent Android phones encrypt your storage, and they give each file its own encryption key. When a file is permanently deleted, its key is destroyed. Without the key, the scrambled data left in the memory chip is effectively unreadable. The flash memory in phones also clears freed space in the background.

So, for a modern phone with its screen lock turned on, a photo that has been permanently deleted from the device is, for practical purposes, gone from that device.

How to make sure a photo is gone

  1. Delete it from your gallery, then empty the Recently Deleted or Bin folder.
  2. Check your cloud service in its app or website, and empty its bin too.
  3. Check other places: chat apps, email, shared albums, a computer you synced with, and memory cards.
  4. Ask the other person to delete it if you sent it to someone. You can’t do this for them.
  5. Before selling or giving away a phone, sign out of your accounts and do a full factory reset. This throws away the encryption keys for everything on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get back a photo I deleted by mistake?

Usually yes, if you act within the waiting period. Look in Recently Deleted or Bin, in your phone’s gallery app and in your cloud service. After that, it may still exist in an older backup or in a chat where you shared it.

Can deleted photos be recovered by the police or experts?

On a modern, encrypted phone, permanently deleted photos are very hard or impossible to recover from the phone itself. Copies in the cloud, in chats or on other people’s devices are a different matter, and can sometimes be obtained through legal requests to the companies involved.

Does deleting a photo free up space?

Only after it leaves the Recently Deleted or Bin folder. If you are short of space, empty that folder too.
